Ipe, left unfinished, will weather to a "patina" gray color. Up until now, folks who want to preserve or enhance Ipe wood's rich, brown colors have used oil base coatings which require reapplication every 6-12 months (that's a lot of fun), or they upgraded to Sikkens which is costly, difficult to apply, and still has to be reapplied every 2 years. With both types you still have to clean the dirt, mold, mildew and algae off the finished deck. Not any more. Read why.

Super Shield will enhance and bring out the natural color of the substrate (material it is applied to) with a high gloss that makes it look wet. It enhances the natural colors and even brings back faded colors. It comes clear high gloss, semi-gloss, gloss, satin, and matte. It can be translucent tinted or solid colored. Think that Sikkens is the best sealer/finish for Ipe? We believed that also for years... until now. Both Super Shield and Sikkens Cetol were applied to the Disney World paddle boat "Richard Irving" as a test for durability. For the next 6 months an average of 8,000 people a day marched over this walkway. 1,500,000 people later, this photo was taken. Sikkens? Darn near gone... like a '59 Cadillac. Super Shield?
