We are currently seeking reliable people (of any age) for work in the following areas:

Deck Designer for Outside Sales

I have an immediate need for at least one college student (male or female but women do better at this than men do) who can work for me part time 4 to 12 hours a week designing and selling decks. The pay is outstanding... but so must be your qualifications:
  • Spatial reasoning skills. By this I mean you must be able to think in 3 dimensions. Reasonably good in physics? You'll do fine. Take a look at some of the decks I have designed. Could you learn to do this?
  • Be trainable... that is, you must be able to follow directions and learn what I can teach you... and I can teach you a lot. Along with this, I expect you to do your homework and become knowledgable about this field. You can do this by studying my websites (see below for links) and studying my written materials and by paying attention and taking notes when we go to in-home Presentations together.
  • Have up to 12 hours a week available for work (don't panic... you set your own hours and days).
  • Have reliable transportation (that's a half way decent running car).
  • Have or invest in a notebook computer, cheap digital camera, brief case, legal pad, mechanical pencil, eraser, calculator and an appointment book. A cell phone is also very handy but not necessary.
  • Be computer literate and Internet savvy. That is, my clients and crews and designers and Drafting and I communicate a LOT via email and we rely upon my websites for much information. See www.vadeck.com (that's where you are now dude), www.composite-decks.com, www.ipe-deck.com, www.hot-tub-spa.com. Specifically, whereas you will be designing decks the old fashioned way... with paper and pencil... I will expect you to use my Excel Deck and Porch Spreadsheet on your handy dandy little notebook computer to figure up the cost of the deck.
  • Be very pleasant, relaxed, and confident with people... but never arrogant. Treat folks like you want to be treated. (Say, didn't Someone about 2000 years ago say something like this?)
  • Be honest with homeowners and be honest with me. If you don't know something, admit it... but get on the phone and call me or tell them you will get back to them with the answer after you research it. If you blow it, tell me. I'll probably find out anyway... so admit it. Come clean. Honesty really is the best policy.
  • Be willing to sign and keep an agreement with me including a non-competition clause that prevents you from taking my training and going to work for someone else or even setting yourself up in business within a 300 mile radius of my home. I hate it when I train my competitors... know what I mean?
  • Be willing to put out flyers or brochures that I give you to a minimum of 25 people who live in the immediate neighborhood of your appointment. I'll show you how. It's actually kind of fun. Also very lucrative.
  • Be willing to dress for success. I am a guy and I almost always wear dress pants, dress shirt and a tie. Sport coat, too, if its cold. Girls (or women) should dress in the feminine equivalent. You would be surprised how important a good, business-like first impression is to a homeowner... especially when the previous deck designers showed up wearing suspenders that held up their overalls... driving a smokin pickup... and chewin tobacco. Then they scratch out a design on the back of a dirty envelope and tell them their price. Think I'm kidding? I am professional in every way I can be professional... and my Designers and Builders and support people are also professional. Trust me: It pays.
  • By the way, speaking of girls (excuse me... women)... it has been my experience that the female gender does extremely well in selling decks. When I first became a Deck Designer I worked with a 19 year old woman who sold decks as fast as she could book appointments. Don't be fooled into thinking it's a man's business. It isn't.
  • Make appointments and be on time. Why? Read the above statement again about professionalism.
  • Use my Presentation Book with my photos and my documentation and my samples. It will blow them away.

The following will be some of what you can look forward to:

  • The national average close ratio for my competitors is 1 out of 3 if they are good. That is, according to national stats, a Deck Designer makes one sale for every three times he is in a home making a presentation. I have a better than 2 out of 3 close ratio. You will also. No gimmicks... just good business. I will show you how. In fact, I am so overwhelmingly confident that I can teach you how that I will pay you about $50 an hour for the time you are in their home even if you don't sell a thing! "Huh!?!? How does that work?"
  • Here's how: I will pay you exactly $200 for each in-home Presentation... even if you don't sell it.
  • On the other hand, if you make a sale... then I don't pay you $200. I pay you a 10% commission. Here's how it works: My last 20 sales averaged exactly $7149 labor only. I will pay you 10% of all labor only sales. 10% of $7149 is $715 (hey, I went to Mary Wash you know... I are a college graduate). Now some will be small sales and some large... but you get 10% of all labor only sales. For a sample contract, see http://www.vadeck.com/images/Contract-sample-4Homeowner1.pdf. This was an actual contract by the way. Name and address have been changed, but the rest of it is accurate.
  • You do the math. If the average sale is $7149 and you sell 2 out of 3 with 1 giving you $200, what do you make for 3 Presentations that takes about 4 hours each including travel time? Hmmm? No, I will not give you the answer. Figure it out. You ARE in college, right? It is a LOT of money for 12 hours of work. By the way, while you are training with me and watching and listening to me do the in-home Presentations... your pay is a little different. You get $100 if we don't sell it and $100 if we do sell it. Why? Cause I'm doing all the WORK, dude. I'm even paying for the gas to take my car up the road. I'm even buying you breakfast or lunch or dinner. It also gives you a great incentive to figure out how to do it all on your own and not rely upon me. How long will it take to train you? Depends on you. It took me exactly ONE sale when I was trained... but then, I wasn't getting anything. The Trainer got it ALL... and he didn't buy me even a Twinkie. Talk about incentive to go it alone.
  • I do some really cool marketing... like hi-tech stuff on my website and some other things that generate a lot of extremely well qualified leads from folks who are very computer savvy and Internet capable. They are several cuts above the average deck customer so they truly appreciate my approach and will be very easy for you to work with. By and large, these are very, very good people. You will come to like our customers. I can't tell you how many dinners I've turned down... (according to my doctor, not enough).

Well, I guess I've bored you enough with this. If you are interested, email me at the email address below with a letter or resume, a photo of yourself, and any questions you might have. I'll get back to you with a time when we can get together and chat more about this job. It really is an awesome opportunity for someone with the right skills.

Web Site Marketer

I have an immediate need for one person (male, female, young, old) who can do one thing:
  1. Make calls and emails from their home to find owners of similar web sites who will cross link with my site.

This is a part time position for which I will pay very good money. Email me at the address below. Send me a resume and cover letter and include a recent photo. I will email you back. Or call me at 540 786-3534 m/w/f 10-1pm Eastern.

This job listing has been updated as of 12/4/06.

Web Development/Programing

Virginia Decking & Remodeling takes great pride in being the first deck and enclosure company on the Internet.  We have been on the technological cutting edge for years.  And we enjoy that position.  But to stay in that position we need to continue to innovate... to create solid web content and exciting new online tools for our visitors to use that will provide them with the deck design, cost analysis, materials and labor availability that they require to make an informed buying decision.  To that end we are seeking an individual who can help us locate and write the code to adapt a CAD or drawing program that will do the following:

Allow the online user to quickly and
easily input the back wall of his house.

Allow the online user to quickly and
easily import one of our deck designs.

As shown in pressure treated:

Labor to Build = $3806
Material Estimate = $2584
Total
= $6390

Allow the online user to easily adjust one or more dimensions of the deck... and notice how the cost automatically changes as well. The labor and estimated material costs will be generated on the fly by my Excel Price Worksheet as the customer makes changes in the deck plan.

As shown in pressure treated:

Labor to Build = $3606
Material Estimate = $2440
Total = $6046

You will need the area of each design calculated on the fly which will be multiplied by predetermined labor and material prices/sq ft (already in the Excel Price Worksheet) so the user can quickly and easily know how much their deck design will cost if they build it themselves or if one of our Builders does it for them anywhere in the country.

Once satisfied with the custom deck design footprint above, the homeowner will add accessories and options with the Excel Price Worksheet. They can then fill in the MS Word Client Worksheet interactive form (in progress), hit another button which will populate a Contract Proposal from the Excel Price Worksheet, the MS Word Client Worksheet interactive form, and the newly drawn Preliminary Plan above and email the Contract Proposal to us.

This is the "lights out end to end" next generation business solution of deck sales that I want you to help me deliver to homeowners all over the country. Tall order for sure.

Are you up to it?

You will be paid as an independent contractor.  You can live anywhere, be any age, and work part time while naming your own hours.  We are interested solely in results.

If you are interested in learning more about this exciting position, please contact Mike French immediately. Contact Us and put the word "programmer" in the subject.

DesignCAD Drafting

We are currently at the point where my Draftsman (Draftsperson to be politically correct) is about to become overwhelmed by the deck, porch and gazebo building plans she has to do.

We need another qualified Draftsman who is comfortable (or can quickly learn and become comfortable) with DesignCAD Express 15 (download a free, fully functional 30 day copy of this great CAD program) and also understands building code for deck and porch construction.  See http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/gov/dpwes/publications/deckdet.htm for an excellent refresher course on deck construction code.

We will email you preliminary plans drawn in DesignCAD format along with a PDF file (Adobe Acrobat Reader) containing house photos, or mail you hand drawings with color print photos of the back of the house.  Once you have designed the Building Plans and emailed them to me, I will review and email them back with changes in red to help you with the design of the footings, beams, and floor joist system to both maximize the use of materials (thereby lowering materials costs) as well as exceed USA national building code by 50%.  You need knowledge of deck and porch construction to fill this position.

You will be paid as an independent contractor.  You can live anywhere, be any age, and work part time as much or as little as you want.  We are interested solely in results.

If you are interested in knowing more, act quickly.  I don't think this position will remain open very long.  Email or call Mike French.  Contact information follows:
