Online Deck Cost Calculator

Note: The below deck calculator is meant to give you a quick way to price out your deck. Prices were last updated 7-23-04 so what it gains in speed, it lacks in accuracy.

For the most up-to-the-minute accurate way to calculate the cost of a deck or porch with lots of different options, see our awesome Excel Deck & Porch Spreadsheet.

DIRECTIONS:

Just put in the area of your new deck in square feet and zero (0) if you want no deck stairs.

If you want deck stairs, put in the height in inches from the door threshold to the ground where the stairs will be located. If you want two (2) sets of deck stairs, just add the elevations together and put that number of inches in the blank

The deck cost calculator will automatically determine and itemize the cost of the stairs*.

* The cost of the stairs is calculated based on the total height of the stairs and assumes 4' wide stairs and the specified number of 4'x4' landing(s).

** GeoDeck composite decking costs include composite floor (tongue & groove with no fasteners showing), composite rail cap (fasteners show), and composite fascia (wraps deck floor and hides ends of deck boards, covers the stair risers, covers outside of stair carriages - fasteners show). It assumes pressure treated (PT) railings and substructure. Add $16/LF labor and $35/LF estimated materials for upgrade to all GeoDeck™ railings. Click on the link for more detailed pricing information on GeoDeck flooring. Click here to place an online GeoDeck order instantly.

*** Prices include pre-drilled and top screwed Ipe decking and pressure treated rails. Add $12/LF labor and $18/LF estimated materials for Ipe railings. Add $2.00/SF labor and $1/SF estimated materials for hidden fasteners by Deck Master. Also, you can subtract about 18% from the above calculator Ipe decking material prices if you go with 1x6 Ipe decking instead of 5/4x6 Ipe decking. Both 5/4x6 and 1x6 have "eased edge" (rounded corners) and look identical from above and below. The 1x6 will easily span joists 16" OC on a diagonal and still exceed code. This information on Ipe is provided courtesy of Bruce Heintz (major Ipe Distributor on the east coast). His email address can be found on our Ipe site at www.ipe-deck.com.

**** To calculate the cost of Fair
way® vinyl railings, you will need to know the total number of linear feet (LF) of railings (including down stairs) and multiply that number by the above per linear foot prices. Please click on the link for more detailed pricing information on Fairway vinyl railings. You can also get a much more comprehensive and very accurate estimate at our new Deck and Porch Spreadsheet.

Work with this Deck Cost Calculator and see what it gives you. It is extremely useful in helping you determine the very best approach to your new deck and there are nine (9) reasons why:

For any given deck design, it instantly calculates the total cost of materials in pressure treated, composite and Ipe (Pau Lope) for the hardcore Do-It-Yourselfer. But for the rest of us, it provides invaluable information because it instantly calculates the total cost of a given deck design nine (9) different ways.

"Huh?"

Yup. Here's how:

Take a deck made from pressure treated wood (#1 decking) for example. This instant Calculator gives you three (3) different total costs for a pressure treated deck... (my firm's Services in red follow below)...

  1. "Turnkey" price. This is the price 99.9% of all deck companies charge because they act as the General Contractor by buying your materials and obtaining the Permit for you. You don't lift a finger in this total service approach. We sell maybe 5%-10% of our decks with this "Turnkey" Service.
  2. "Total Labor to Build Deck Completely + Materials" price. This is where you (not the Deck Company) act as the General Contractor. You buy the materials (with our help) and you obtain the Permit (with our help). And you save a bunch of money this way. How much? Typically about 25% because, you see, 25% is a typical General Contractor profit. If you are the GC, you save the GC's profit. You're doing his work, so you should save it. We do maybe 65% of our decks with this Service.
  3. "Labor to Frame + Materials" price. This is where you act as the GC (like in #2 above), but you also put a little sweat equity into your deck. We frame it (the hard part) ready for you to install the decking and railings (the easy part). You save even more. How much? About 40% all together! We do about 25% of our decks with this Service.

But this incredibly smart little Deck Cost Calculator doesn't stop with a pressure treated deck. It also gives you the same above three (3) total costs for decks done in composite (like Trex or GeoDeck™) or the awesome exotic wood called Ipe (Pau Lope or Mataverde... which, incidentally, we know of a supplier that beats everyone else's prices).

So, let's recap: For any given deck design, you can instantly view and analyze your total deck costs in three (3) Services for pressure treated, three (3) Services for composite, and three (3) Services for Ipe (Pau Lope or Mataverde). By carefully studying the results, you should be able to determine the very best Service and the best material in order to get the most for your money.

In this way you become a very wise consumer. We have put into your hands a tool by which you can become a very smart deck shopper. Tell your neighbors, your friends, your relatives and your work associates about this Calculator. Better still, take a few minutes and email them the url to this page. We all love to share exciting discoveries (and it doesn't hurt that we look smart in the process).

Note: Many of my competitors probably think I'm a little nutty to offer my web site visitors an online method of calculating the cost of their deck instantly... no waiting to get a price... no emailing to get a price... no phone calls to get a price... no Salesman sweating all over your kitchen table while he's trying to sell you on why his deck is really worth all that money. You see, most deck companies won't publish their prices on their web site and most deck companies typically don't give you a quote over the phone. Why? They think (cleverly) that by withholding the price from you, then they will be better able to get their foot in your door. Then once they are "in", they think they can "sell" you on why you should pay so much money for their deck. (A few deck company names come to mind immediately who thrive on this rather sneaky approach... but their names shall remain anonymous.) Actually, some deck companies are pretty good at this approach, too. It does work.

So why don't I take the same approach when it seems to be the industry standard? Funny thing happens when you are honest with people and transparent and give them the information that they want: They begin to believe in you. They begin to realize that you are honest and maybe you're not trying to send your kid to college on the profit from their deck alone. In short, it's just good business. Honesty is still the best policy. Transparency is even better. That is what this web site is all about. That is what I hope I am all about.

By the way, enjoy the Calculator. If you study its features and put a little effort into understanding how it generates so many different ways of looking at deck costs (3 different materials x 3 different Services = 9 different approaches), you will discover that you have a tool by which you can mathematically and systematically determine the best deck materials with a Service that you can afford.

Now that you have mastered the above "Deck Cost Calculator"... I have just recently uploaded a really comprehensive and super cool Excel spreadsheet that will calculate the cost of a deck and/or screen porch with a bunch of options.
